Working remotely from Darwin for a month
A month in Darwin works if you set it up properly: a real desk, air-conditioning you can rely on, a suburb that matches how you want your mornings to go, and a plan for the heat. We host a lot of people doing exactly this, from consultants on a project to families trying the Territory before a move, and this is what we tell them before they arrive.
Pick the suburb by your mornings
Darwin is small, so the choice is less about commute and more about what you want outside your window at 6 am. Everything below is within 20 minutes of the airport.

What to check in a long-stay home
- A desk and a chair you can sit in for eight hours. Not a dining table. Ask before you book; we will tell you which of our homes have a dedicated workspace.
- Internet. Ask for the connection type and a speed. NBN fixed-line and 5G home broadband both work well across Darwin; a 4G dongle in a tower apartment does not.
- Air-conditioning in the room you will work in, not just the bedrooms. In the wet season you will run it all day.
- Secure parking if you are hiring a car, and a lift if you are above the second floor with a month of groceries.
- A washing machine and dryer in the home. You will change clothes twice a day from October to March.
- Servicing. Our long-stay homes come with weekly servicing and a mid-stay linen change, so the place stays as it was on day one.
The time-zone advantage
Darwin runs on Australian Central Standard Time, UTC+9:30, with no daylight saving. In winter that puts you half an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne; in summer, an hour and a half. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Perth are an hour and a half behind, Tokyo half an hour ahead, and the US west coast overlaps in the early morning. For anyone working with Asia, it is one of the easiest Australian cities to be in.
How the week flows
The heat sets the day, so work with it. Be outside by six: the Nightcliff foreshore, the Esplanade in the city, or a lap of East Point before it warms up. Work from about eight until three or four, through the hottest hours, in the air-conditioning. Then the day opens up again: a swim, the markets, and sunset at 6:30 pm from wherever you are. In the dry season (May to September) this is close to perfect. In the wet, the afternoon storm is your coffee break, and the evenings are warm and quiet.
Weekends are for the things that need a full day: Litchfield, the Tiwi Islands, a harbour cruise, the Saturday and Sunday markets. Four weekends is enough to do all of them once.
If you need a desk that is not in the apartment
Darwin Innovation Hub in the city runs coworking desks and meeting rooms with a start-up crowd, and Regus has serviced offices and day desks in the CBD. In Parap, Echelon Workspaces does the same for people who want to work outside the city grid. All three sell by the day or the month. Cafés with reliable Wi-Fi and power points are rarer than in the southern capitals, so treat them as a change of scene rather than an office.
Practical
Supermarkets: the city, Nightcliff and Casuarina Square all have full-size stores; Cullen Bay has a small one. A car is useful but not essential if you are in the city, the Waterfront or Cullen Bay; it is essential in the northern suburbs. Gyms and 50 m pools are in every part of town, with the Nightcliff and Parap pools the two our guests use most. Chemists, medical centres and Royal Darwin Hospital are all within 20 minutes of any of the suburbs above. Bring a hat, and buy a mosquito repellent you like on day one.

Our team’s tip
Book the wet season if the dates are flexible. November to March is quieter, the rates are lower, the storms are worth the trip on their own, and you will have Litchfield's waterfalls at full flow on the weekends they are open.

Is Darwin internet good enough for video calls?
Yes, on NBN fixed-line or 5G home broadband, which is what our long-stay homes use. Confirm the connection type before you book anywhere; a mobile dongle is not enough for a month of calls.
Do I need a car for a month in Darwin?
Not in the city, the Waterfront or Cullen Bay. Everywhere else, a car makes the month easier, and you will want one for Litchfield and the weekend markets anyway.
What does a month cost?
